Best Places to Work for in AK

Alaska has a surprisingly varied economy and has a variety of job providers in the state. The economy has been described by University of Alaska economist Scott Goldsmith as a “three legged stool”. The first leg accounts for the jobs in the petroleum and gas industry, the next leg is the federal government, and the third leg is all other services within the state. The seafood industry in Alaska also provides a great deal of jobs as well.

Alaska has an unemployment rate of 6.4% which is relatively low and is near the rate of the rest of the United States. There are many employers that are also large national employers and there are also employers that are more tied to the Alaskan state as well. Among the national employers are Walmart, Fred Meyer, and Providence Health Care Services, a large hospital chain.

Walmart is a national employer in retail that has literally millions of people on their payroll. Fred Meyer was established early in the 20th century as one of the first one-stop shopping experience as a combined grocery store, clothing store, and drug store. Providence Health Care is a Catholic hospital chain that operates in five states and employs over 4,000 people in the state of Alaska.

Among the employers that are more tied to Alaska would include BP Exploration Alaska, which has over 2,000 employees within the Alaska borders. BP is currently headquartered in London England and is known as sixth largest oil and gas company within the world. BP has a major presence in Alaska’s oil and gas industry. Another employer that has a wide following in Alaska would be Trident Seafoods, which was established in 1973 and is the largest seafood company in the United States. Trident Seafoods has a major presence in Alaska where they fish for the main Alaskan seafood exports: salmon, cod, pollock, and crab.
